ABC network executives found the ending unsatisfying. After viewing the finished film, the network insisted on re-shooting the dramatic truck fall to include a spectacular explosion and fireball since the truck's tank was labeled "Flammable". Spielberg had made a choice to treat the truck as a monster more than a machine. As such he decided to "kill" the truck "slowly and painfully" like a "dying beast", feeling it lent a more lyrical context to its death. Spielberg thought an explosion would be both unnecessary and unimaginative. When he was told by producer George Eckstein about the network's directive to re-shoot Spielberg refused saying "If the network does force you to blow the truck up, you get another director to do it because I'm not going to do it." However, Eckstein agreed with Spielberg's original ending and fought back against ABC not to change anything. He ultimately prevailed and the original ending was kept.
