Melissa Joan Hart turned down the role of Julie James. When asked why, she said "I just thought it was another rip-off of Scream." (She's not entirely wrong, the two are very much cut from the same cloth, and written by the same screenwriter. Although Kevin Williamson adapted Lois Clark Duncan's novel first. He wrote it in the early to mid-90s and he shopped it around to all the studios, who all said no, since Slashers were dead at that point, so he put it away. Then in about 95, while housesitting for a friend, and while in the midst of getting Shining-like cabin fever and watching a news story about Florida's Gainesville Ripper; he suddenly got inspired and whipped out the 120 page screen play for Scream in about 48 hours. He submitted it to the studios, and MIRAMAX eagerly bought it and produced it. Scream of course became a massive hit in December of 96, and singlehandedly revitalized the slasher genre. And at that point Williamson took I KNOW out of mothballs and resubmitted it; Columbia Pictures then bought the rights and the rest is history. So actually if anything Scream is a ripoff of I KNOW, not the other way around, although conventional wisdom has it otherwise.)
