The series is set in Middle-earth's Second Age, thousands of years before the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies, and chronicles the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron after the defeat of his master Morgoth in the First Age. Since the Second Age spans 3,441 years in the novels, the writers initially considered non-linear storytelling to cover this long time period in the series, but decided that this would prevent viewers from emotionally investing in the series. Fortunately, J.R.R. Tolkien's estate gave their blessing to condense events spread over thousands of years in the books into a much shorter time period, like they had done with Peter Jackson's movie adaptations. This limited the number of human characters needed for the story (since they have relatively short lifespans) and enabled several characters who never meet in the books to appear in the same time frame.
