It is never explained in the film, or in the novel, that how and why Old Nick constructed Room in the first place. When Joy tells her kidnapping story to Jack, she claims that Nick brought her over to Room immediately after the kidnapping, which would mean that perhaps he was infatuated with Joy prior to the kidnapping for some reason. As so, Nick intricately planned the abduction and took his time to construct Room in a garden shed while stalking Joy routinely.
