The show's writers occasionally satirized Monk's nearly perfect memory. For example Detective Monk: Mr. Monk Goes Back to School (2003) (#2.1), he can't remember if a crime scene on a roof is his fourth or fifth worst nightmare, since he "didn't bring the list".
