In the summer of 1792, Marie Antoinette maintained secret contacts with an alliance of European powers which were at war with France. She requested from her allies a proclamation that would help safeguard the French royal family from radical revolutionaries. The proclamation came in the form of the Brunswick Manifesto (July 1792) in which the Allies threatened to burn Paris to the ground in case the French royal family were harmed. Instead of intimidating the population of Paris as intended, the Manifesto caused increased hatred for the French royals.
