Gandalf's meeting with Saruman and Galadriel, from the first film, does not appear in the book. After leaving the Dwarves at the border of Mirkwood, he isn't seen again in the novel until he re-appears with Bard and Thranduil, a scene not shown until the third film. His adventures in between, involving the White Council, the Necromancer and Dol Guldur, happen off-page in the book, and are detailed in the Appendices of 'The Return of the King'. The filmmakers showed this part because, for a major character from The Lord of the Rings to disappear for that length of time would have been "too much of a tease."
