The character of Tess Mercer/Lutessa Lena Luthor (Cassidy Freeman), was created to fill the spot left by Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor in season eight. Tess is an amalgam of Miss Teschmacher (Valerie Perrine) in Superman (1978), Mercy Graves (Lisa Edelstein) in Le avventure di Superman (1996), Lena Luthor and Contessa Del Portenza from the comic books. The name "Tess Mercer" references "Teschmacher".
