Nino Rota's iconic score earned him an Oscar nomination, but it was later rescinded when the Academy learned he had reused a small part of an older score. Rota later won for Part II. If the two films had come out today, his situation might have been reversed. The most recent legislation states that a film's score must contain a minimum of only 60% original music, where sequels must be 80% original.
