In the film, it's unclear precisely how much of Ghidorah's consciousness there is left when it takes control of Mechagodzilla; what's definitively confirmed in the film is that Ghidorah's skull still retains something of its consciousness which is directly responsible for infecting Mechagodzilla and turning it into a Robotic Psychopath. The director believes Mechagodzilla's consciousness is the result of Ghidorah's consciousness merging with the Mecha's AI to create a new personality. The novelization supports the director's interpretation and states when Mechagodzilla's consciousness is born that it "did not know who it was, or what it was, but it was full of rage and the black joy of finally being, and having limbs, and teeth, a boundless, unending energy at its command." And the novel seems to hint that Mechagodzilla's personality is formed of a Fusion Dance of Ghidorah's consciousness remnants devouring Ren Serizawa's consciousness. It's also unclear whether Ghidorah's consciousness remnants only awaken when the Hollow Earth energy is uploaded to the Mecha or was already awake and waiting.
