As Sam is riding the light cycle into town the sections of the display are projected onto his face. Naturally, this is just a dramatic effect as the instruments are meant to be read, not projected. This type of effect was first used in 2001: Odissea nello spazio (1968) when the astronauts are operating the pods during their EVAs.
