The truck used during the opening chase sequence was referred to on set as "The Train". It's front bumper was replaced with a steel i-beam so it could plow through anything it came into contact with. Eddie Murphy did many of the stunts needed during this sequence, and these shots were filmed in downtown L.A., not Detroit. The shot of Axel Foley flying out the back and hitting the side of the truck was obviously a stuntman, one who didn't want to get back in the truck after.
