The Thanolekgolo worm species was a native of Installation 04 placed there by the Forerunners as a genetic experiment permutation to combat the Flood. Because of its resilience to extreme conditions, it is the only surviving species on the fragments of the now destroyed Halo installation. They're related to the Lekgolo, which if there are enough of them they can combine into large intelligent gestalts called Mgalekgolo that the Covenant frequently fits within armour suits and uses as shock troopers known as "Hunters".
