Olivia Colman convinced director Susanne Bier to cast her as Angela Burr, even though she was pregnant with her third child, and to rewrite the script so that Burr was pregnant as well. She reasoned that Frances McDormand did well playing her character Marge Gunderson as pregnant in Fargo (1996) and "the pregnancy added to the drama [in Fargo]: the domesticity versus the extraordinary nature of her job. And I think it adds a weird power to this part, too." The difference, of course, is that McDormand was not actually pregnant during the filming of Fargo (she wore a prosthetic "pregnancy bump"), while Colman really was. It was McDormand who later handed Colman her Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in La favorita (2018).
