Needles' name is significant in three ways: It is a pun on the fact that he is often poking and prodding Marty verbally (i.e., "needling" him) by calling him "chicken" and otherwise belittling himgiven his wild and unhealthy "spaced out" appearance, he is obviously on illegal psychedelic drugs that he self-injects (i.e., using hypodermic "needles")his middle initial "J" references that of Michael J. Fox, the actor who plays Marty.
