The Livingston family, which is prominently mentioned in the series is one of the oldest and most influential old families in New York, descended from Lord Robert Livingston the Elder. A Scottish Earl, he was part of the peerage of Scotland. Together with his brother-in-law Pieter Schuyler (founder of the famous Schuyler family in the Broadway musical Hamilton), they became powerful forces in the development of New York. The Livingston are not to be confused with Cora's family in Downton Abby- the Levisons.
