The swords used in this movie are the folded steel Orchid katanas by Paul Chen. Originally blue, they were painted red to match the armor of the Samurai that Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) kills in his first engagement with Katsumoto's (Ken Watanabe's) men. It is the same armor in which Taka (Koyuki) dresses Algren for the final battle. In all, seven live blades were purchased for the production from Ameurasiart in the United States.
