The nature of the "house demon" that attacks Jake is similar to the large rippling soil (the large traversing lump of soil) and moving cornstalks in Grano rosso sangue (1984), in that it is partly invisible and partly formed from the very material that comprises its prey's surroundings. The fact that it is referred to as a demon (by Walter) may also imply that it can possess people's bodies just as He Who Walks Behind the Rows (from "Children of the Corn") can.
