The script was originally written to parody the circumstances of Graham Taylor's resignation as England manager in 1993, with various other high-profile coaches turning the job down until Terry Venables, who had been out of management for three years due to legal troubles, took the job on. When Kevin Keegan resigned as England manager in very similar circumstances just as filming was about to start, the script was given a last-minute rewrite to make it more a parody of Keegan's resignation.
