The filmmakers didn't want the Soul Stone to be somewhere audiences already knew, or to have it be random. They chose to have it be a secret for one of the characters, therefore becoming emotional. Prior fan theories as to the location of the Soul Stone included the herb garden in Wakanda (which would explain how the stone would give the Heart-shaped Herb its powers) and even inside Heimdall (the stone possibly being the source of his all-seeing eyes).
