By birth, Marie Antoinette was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. This was a female-line cadet house of the older House of Habsburg. At various points, Habsburg-Lorraine members held the thrones of the Holy Roman Empire, the German Confederation, Austria-Hungary, the Second Mexican Empire, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Modena and Reggio, and the Duchy of Parma.
