Julian Fellowes's inspiration for his original story came from authors such as Edith Wharton ("The Buccaneers") and close friend Henry James's general research of the novel's time period and subject matter. Elizabeth McGovern's character, Cora, was the first one he developed.Fellowes also sourced the 1989 book "To Marry an English Lord" by Gail MacColl and Carol McD. Wallace. The latter of these two authors is the great-great-granddaughter of Lew Wallace, author of the novel "Ben-Hur". Prior to starring in "Downton Abbey", Hugh Bonneville appeared as Pontius Pilate in a version of Ben Hur (2010).
