After the overwhelming success of the film Baby Mama (2008), creators wanted to produce a gender-swapped version. However, several studios failed to pick it up after being undecided on who should play Ben Wheeler. Overall, Freeform bought the show rights for $125,000 and chose Jean-Luc Bilodeau for the lead, with the rest of the cast picked shortly afterward.
