The imperial probe droid investigating planet Hoth at the start of the film is based on a small background detail from one panel of the graphic story "The Long Tomorrow" (1976) by Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, with Giraud's permission. Other science-fiction films also have borrowed imagery from this same graphic work.
