In the original script written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the movie was to open in China with the bones of a new dinosaur, the Malasaurus, to be discovered. Director Colin Trevorrow decided that this dinosaur (later renamed the Indominus Rex), would instead be a hybrid, to further tie it in with concepts created in the previous movies.
