Season 3 is based on the comic series Flashpoint, where Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother from dying but wakes to find a/the world near the brink of destruction. At the beginning of the season it's established that 15 years prior to the pilot of the series, Reverse Flash kills Barry's mother. In Season 1, Barry attempts to stop Reverse Flash from killing his mother, but he can't go through with it and witnesses her death again. In the Season 2 finale, he is successful in saving her.
