Due to several rights issues and internal struggles, the project was delayed several times, leading to the departure of intended director Guillermo del Toro after 18 months of pre-production. Producer Sir Peter Jackson was originally planning on making Macchine mortali (2018), but since appointing del Toro had been his idea, and hiring a new and unprepared director would be risky, he felt the responsibility to step in himself and finish the project. Given the amount of money already spent, the studio only allowed him and Weta an additional six months of pre-production. Jackson had to start filming relatively unprepared, without his usual extensive reliance on storyboards, animatics, pre-visuals etc., and had to battle a stomach ulcer at the same time. Another obstacle was that originally, two movies had been planned and shot. After principle photography, it was decided to create a trilogy by restructuring footage from the first two movies into a third movie, which required additional writing and filming. Most of the material filmed in the additional 10-week shoot was adapted from the Appendices to the novel The Return of the King, which expanded the history of Middle-Earth.
