Dawn and Zoey's Japanese names, Hikari and Nozomi, are references to two Shinkansen "bullet train" lines in Japan of the same names. The Nozomi is faster than the Hikari, possibly implying that Zoey is farther along in her coordinating skills than Dawn. Zoey and Dawn also contrast in terms of their appearances. Zoey is more of a tomboy as seen in her short haircut and her choice in Contest outfits, which are stylized suits rather than dresses whereas Dawn is more feminine.
