In the narrative behind Frodo leaving Middle-earth and The Shire to The Grey Havens. Frodo was unable to cope with the traumas of his journey. Tolkien based this heavily on the first-hand experiences he and fellow British soldiers had with PTSD, resulting from their physical, mental and emotional traumas in the trenches of World War I, as well as seeing their comrades suffer and die from horrific new weapons of war.
