The story and characters in this film were cited as a major influence on Joker (2019). Beyond the obvious link of Robert De Niro appearing in both movies, De Niro's Rupert Pupkin is an untalented wannabe comedian much like Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, and the Jerry Langford role that Jerry Lewis portrayed is not far removed from De Niro's work as Murray Franklin in Joker.
