Ethan Hawke based his character of Arthur Harrow on religious leader David Koresh. Koresh was the leader of an off shoot of Christianity called the Branch Davidians who had made a ranch in Mount Carmel Center, near Waco, Texas their home and place of worship since 1935. Like Harrow, Koresh's faith in and devotion to his god was absolute. On February 28, 1993, suspecting the group of possessing illegal firearms, more than 70 ATF Agents tried to serve an arrest warrant against Koresh and a search warrant for the compound, using "dynamic entry" (no-knock). The group, composed around 130 men, women and children. Even ATF reports cannot say with certainty who fired first, but a shootout ensued, killing 4 ATF Agents and 6 Branch Davidians and starting a siege which would last for 51 days. On April 19, despite Koresh's agreement to a peaceful surrender when he had finished his holy writings, approximately 900 members of ATF, FBI, military personnel and local law enforcement besieged the ranch. 76 Branch Davidians (20 of whom were children), including Koresh, were killed in the assault. Shot during the attack, or killed by the fire that destroyed the ranch.
