During a 20th anniversary screening of the film, Robin Shou revealed that due to a tight budget and shooting schedule, and also because he was pulling double duties as leading man and martial arts choreographer, he was unable to be on set to supervise the fight between Sub Zero and Scorpion and as a result was supposed to be very different rhythmically. Same for the fight scene between Liu Kang and Baraka, where Shou was doubled by Tony Jaa for the majority of the sequence because he was off shooting other scenes simultaneously.
