J.K. Simmons had already been considered to reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Simmons was happy to do it, but when he was cast as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League (2017) from Marvel's competitor DC Comics, the idea was abandoned. Simmons was then contacted almost right before Far From Home's release, and accepted. Director Jon Watts acknowledged that Simmons could have refused, but he never considered another actor: "It's gotta be him. Like, if it wasn't him, it wasn't worth doing." Simmons subsequently called Raimi and received the director's blessing to return to the role for the new film. Raimi himself later signed on to direct Marvel's Doctor Strange nel multiverso della follia (2022).
