Cary Joji Fukunaga hired Linus Sandgren on recommendation by Emma Stone while working on the Netflix limited series Maniac (2018) (Sandgren photographed La La Land (2016)). After attending an early screening of First Man - Il primo uomo (2018) that Sandgren was completing work on, Fukunaga agreed with her recommendation.
