In the documentary Ennio: The Maestro (2021), maestro Morricone stated that this piece was written for the Franco Zifferelli movie Amore senza fine (1981) but after hearing there would be more composers working on that flick, withdrew it and used it as "Deborah's Theme" for Once Upon a Time in America couple of years later.
