One of Jack Nicholson's two characters in the film, President James Dale, is killed by a lethal handshake caused by the Martian Leader. In Tim Burton's earlier film Batman (1989), Nicholson's character of the Joker killed someone else with a handshake involving a joy buzzer that delivered a lethal electrical charge.
