The network's decision to renew the show for Season 6 prompted an obscenity-laden Twitter outburst by star Constance Wu. She later explained that she was hoping the show had been canceled because there were other projects she wished to do. She also posted an apology on her Instagram account: "My words and ill-timing were insensitive to those who are struggling, especially insensitive considering the fact that I used to be in that struggle too. I do regret that and it wasn't nice and I am sorry for that." According to an L.A. Times article, it wasn't another film but a play she'd been hoping to do, one in which she would have played a "not Asian-specific" role and likely worked for scale. But she had to pass on it and return to the show, for which she is under contract for another two years. "I had this moment of heat where I got upset because I had to give up a job I had been looking forward to and had been chasing for a while," she said of her self-described "Twitter fiasco." In a Sept. 16 interview with The Hollywood Reporter at a screening of her new movie Hustlers, Wu said she was "so scared" to return to [the show] because "The public was so pissed off at me that I assumed [my castmates] were, too." But she was relieved to find out they all understood and supported her. "It was moving to me how many people from the show reached out to me, and even on set ... to say, 'Just so you know, we love you and we know who you are, and you didn't deserve any of that stuff.' Because they also know that I'm an actress -- I can be dramatic." Months later in an interview with Backstage magazine she stated that while she doesn't shy away from feeling ready to move on to other ventures, she also doesn't understate the value of acting on a long-standing series.
