In the opening scene in the graveyard, Dr. Frankenstein while digging up the corpse, throws a shovelful of dirt over his shoulder in the face of a monument to Death (a skeleton clothed in a robe and leaning on a sword). This signals his disregard for death and his belief in his own mastery over it.
