According to a recent quote from Eric Kripke, the "fact" that the show was only planned to have five seasons is a misconception. He stated that in the earlier years, they were in constant fear of getting cancelled and never had a planned amount of seasons. It is true, however, that Kripke always envisioned the show building towards the Apocalypse arc from the beginning. It just so happened to fall into place at the end of Season 5.
