Near the end of the film, Randy Quaid (as Russell Casse), who is drunk during most of the film, is soberly sitting in his fighter jet preparing to attack the aliens, and says "I picked a hell of a day to quit drinking". This is an almost direct quote from "Airplane!", spoken by Steve McCroskey (played by Lloyd Bridges), who says, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking / drinking / amphetamines / sniffing glue / etc."
