Cooper's introduction of his involvement of the all river tournament wearing a fleur de lis and varying shades of blue is a subtle "royal" reference to the city of New Orleans. As it wasn't until later Mardi Gras colors (purple green and gold) would be adapted and that particular city was also the scene for many of the film's source material and mentioned in it's theme song.
