Una famiglia americana (1972) was commissioned by CBS as a result of negative backlash against the network's "rural purge" of the early 1970s, a series of cancellations of several rural-themed, but popular shows. Hoping the show would underperform and head to a quick cancellation, CBS scheduled "The Waltons" in a "death slot" against the popular Flip (1970) and Mod Squad, i ragazzi di Greer (1968). Instead, the show became an instant hit and went on to run for nine seasons. Ironically, the iconic Waltons house was used as the Jones' house on Mayberry R.F.D. (1968), a prominent casualty of the "rural purge" in 1971.
