Though a Fort Charles did not exist, the massacre that resulted is based upon the real massacre at Fort William Henry. The British garrison, including militia and civilians, surrendered after a siege to the French and their Native allies. Under the terms of their surrender they were allowed to leave the fort with their muskets, but no ammunition. As a result the column was harassed and then attacked by bands of Natives who captured some of the prisoners and butchered many others. The exact number is debated from as low as 100 to 1,500. The event is portrayed in 'Last of the Mohicans.'
