Alice Wu acknowledges that this film could have been shaped towards a more general audience as a more traditional crowd-pleaser - ie a romantic comedy that ends in a happy couple - but she notes that Donald Trump had just been elected while she was writing the script, and that gave her pause. What was initially set in a big, diverse city instead shifted to a small, rural, conservative town.
