Nancy McKeon's character was originally named "Foxy." until head writers Linda Marsh and Margie Peters vetoed the idea. Then NBC network Executive Producer Fred Silverman, seeing that there were four girls and a house mother in the cast, suggested Jo. This was a reference to Jo March from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, a story about four girls and a house mother. Everyone, including Marsh and Peters, liked that idea, and it stuck.
