Ragnar Lothbrok is a figure of medieval histories which attributes various exploits and sons to him, consistently Ivar the Boneless, Björn Ironside, Hvitserk and Sigurd Snake-in-eye. In the Icelandic sagas, he appears in two sagas: The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons and the Tale of Ragnar. These sagas hold a somewhat special place as they serve as a bridge of sorts with the legendary sagas and the more grounded sagas of the Icelanders and king's sagas. Through his son Sigurd Snake-in-eye he is described as a forefather of the Norwegian and Danish royal houses. His supposed descendant Harald Finehair fathered a considerable amount of children that reached adulthood, so many in fact that a large number of ethnic non-Icelandic Scandinavians are related to him in some way. By this tradition, many Scandinavians are the descendants of Ragnar as well.
