The identity of Batgirl has a long history in Batman-related stories. The identity was introduced (as a hyphenated Bat-Girl) in Batman #139 (April, 1961), created by writer Bill Finger and artist Sheldon Moldoff. She was intended as a kid sidekick for Batwoman/Kathy Kane, who was depicted as a solo adventurer since 1956. The original Batgirl was Betty Kane, Batwoman's niece. Both superheroines were written out in 1964, though Betty was later reintroduced as the superheroine Flamebird. Barbara Gordon was introduced as the second Batgirl in 1967.
