Make-up supervisor Lesley Vanderwalt stated that Zhaan's original designs did not had her skin being blue. At first the conceptual artist Kevin Harper suggested that Zhaan's skin would change color according to what emotions she displayed, or like a plant that would change color in different shades of lights. However due to budget and time constraints, it was realized that having Zhaan's skin color changed constantly would be impossible to accomplish. So, in the end, Zhaan's skin was kept as being the color blue regardless of what her emotions were and regardless of what type of light she was standing under.
