Of Edward Bunker's four novels, this is the only one entirely centered on life inside the walls of prison. His first, No Beast So Fierce (turned into the movie Straight Time) is about an ex convict fresh out of prison; his third, Little Boy Blue, is about a troubled kid in-and-out of reformatories; and Dog Eat Dog is a heist story.
