Sam Peckinpah wanted Stella Stevens for the part of Carol McCoy, having worked with her on La ballata di Cable Hogue (1970). Robert Evans was an executive at the studio and cast wife Ali MacGraw instead. [A decision he might have regretted as Steve McQueen and MacGraw began an affair that led to MacGraw divorcing Evans and marrying McQueen.]
